Costume & Makeup
This stemmed from the idea that a woman's shape should be covered by many layers of unflattering clothing.
'Origin' has one character, Meabh. She is a young woman who has, assumedly, been convicted of witchcraft and has been killed by drowning. This was a common way of killing witches in these times, the 1700s.
Clothing in these days was plain and quite unshaped for women.
This stemmed from the idea that a woman's shape should be covered by many layers of unflattering clothing.
In terms of makeup, we won't be putting very much makeup on Meabh for two reasons.
1. Makeup in these days was not what it is today. It was a sign of aristocracy and it was not meant to look natural. Faces were literally painted, and males and females wore this. We want to create the idea that Meabh wasn't upper class in her life in the 1700s. The lack of makeup coupled with her plain nightdress will help us to sculpt this idea for the viewers.
2. We also want to show that Meabh was taken in the night, and this could be a reason for her lack of makeup and her nightdress. For this reason, she will look very natural, her hair will possibly be half up half down, wearing very minimal makeup and a plain white nightdress.
